As one of the well-known landmarks in the world, it is no wonder that the Hollywood Sign has been seen again and again on television, in film, in video games, in commercials, on the news, and in a remarkable variety of licensed merchandise around the world.

We'd like to invite you to be part of that legacy by including the Sign in your next project. If you're covering the Sign as part of a news story, or if you'd like to use an image of the Sign for any sort of commercial purpose, be it licensing, filming, or photography, there are resources you can use to get the access and permissions you will need. We've put together the following information to help steer you through the process as smoothly as possible.

Can't find the information you need below? Contact Betsy Isroelit at RBI and we'll steer you in the right direction.

Do I Need Permission?

If you are an amateur photobug or videographer shooting only for your own personal use, then there is no need to seek permission before aiming your lens at the Sign. But if the images or footage you are taking are intended for any sort of commercial purpose, then permission is required.

For a handy set of maps showing the best locations to view and film the Sign, click here.

If you are a reporter doing a story on the Sign, or if you need factual and historical data, we would be happy to supply the information you require or help you get the permissions you need to photograph/film at or near the Sign.

The area immediately around the Sign is highly restricted to protect the Sign and the fragile environmental area surrounding it. To obtain permission to access this area, contact the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. Any commercial filming or photography on Los Angeles park land must also go through this office for a permit.

The city maintains a website here where you can learn more about the permit process and how their film office can assist your production.

Within the Los Angeles region, any filming activity that has a commercial purpose and is not filmed on a certified sound stage or studio backlot must have a film permit from FilmL.A., the contracted sole provider of film permit coordination for the County and City of Los Angeles and numerous other cities and agencies. When filmmakers apply for permits, FilmL.A.'s team of production coordinators works to obtain the required approvals from agencies or departments such as police and fire, transportation, animal regulation and public works.

This process is now handled through a state-of-the-art Online Permit System. Location Managers and other customers can apply for a permit online and review the status of required approvals in real-time. When all requirements are met, completed permits can be received by email.
