Los Angeles is an exciting city with many exciting things to do. But if you're looking for one that will both exercise and inspire your imagination, check out the California Science Center. Whether you're taking in a breathtaking spectacle at the on-site IMAX theater or checking out one of the many exhibits, your senses will be enthralled by what the Science Center offers. Read on to learn more about this prime destination, and be sure to plan your next visit as soon as possible.

Prepare Your Visit

Outside of the California Science Center

You'll be gratified to learn that the permanent galleries at the California Science Center are free to access during regular business hours (more on that in a moment). If you want to partake in an IMAX experience, you must purchase a timed ticket. We'll discuss this further in Experience IMAX below.

You don't need to make a reservation for permanent or special exhibitions. This includes the space shuttle Endeavor. Suppose you've made an IMAX reservation and need to reschedule due to illness or another unforeseen event. In that case, the Center has a flexible rescheduling policy—though be aware that they don't offer refunds.

The exhibits are open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while the box office is open from 9:30 AM to 3:15 PM. Note that the Science Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

Exhibits

While you're visiting the Center, you'll have the option of exploring one of the permanent exhibits or taking in one of the special exhibitions. If time allows, you might be able to fit them all into one visit.

Permanent exhibits include a lesson on fire safety, an immersive look at animal life cycles, an exploration of animal habitats, and a peek into deep space. Though the special exhibitions may vary depending on when you visit, examples include an impressive display of the space shuttle Endeavor and an informative exhibit on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Experience IMAX

IMAX Experience

If you've never seen an IMAX film before, it's time to treat yourself. There's nothing quite like experiencing a movie on a screen that measures several stories high, particularly when it's as beautifully shot as these films are.

Most IMAX films focus on art, nature, or the wonders of space. Some examples include Amazon Adventure, which takes viewers on a tour of the jungles of South America, or Under the Sea, an exploration of the briny deep and the creatures who call it home.

Dining

Families who are making a visit to the Science Center an all-day event will need sustenance. Fortunately, there are a few options to choose from.

Grab a prepackaged sandwich or wrap it at the Market with some fresh fruit on the side. If you'd prefer something hot, the Grill has hamburgers, pizza, and a selection of hot sandwiches. For an afternoon pick-me-up, drop by the Coffee Bar—they have a cappuccino for the adults, root beer floats, and hand-scooped ice cream for the kids.

Tickets

US space shuttle

When you visit the Science Center's website, buying timed tickets for an IMAX presentation is easy. They'll need to know how many tickets you want and when you plan to go. Discounts are available if you have children, students, or seniors (65 and older) at your party. Note that members are also eligible for discount pricing, so if you intend to visit often, you might want to think about applying.

If you spent your last trip to LA looking for star's homes hiking to the Hollywood Sign, and exploring Disneyland, think about working the California Science Center into your next visit. It just might be the highlight of your vacation!
